American Cherry (Prunus serotina)


A medium sized hardwood that is found in an area from North American Appalachian states of Pennsylvania to West Virginia up to Southern Canada.

It is a species of deciduous tree growing to 15-30 m tall with a stem diameter of up 1.2 metres, and occasionally more. It is a moderately long-lived tree, with ages of up to 258 years known.

General Characteristics
American Cherry is a relatively hard timber and of medium weight, strength and resistance to shock.

Colour / Pattern
The heartwood is usually reddish-brown with easily

distinguishable creamy sapwood. Features a fine grain and luster that that tends to be inconspicuous with a uniform even texture. The timber is generally flat cut, which gives a distinctive flame pattern and is characterized by flame pattern and by dark-gum veins in small pockets and minute pin clusters.

Uses
This timber is used in applications ranging from fine furniture to architectural interiors as well as extensively being used in high-end luxury yacht fit-outs. The timber is valuable, perhaps the premier cabinetry timber of the U.S., traded as "cherry". It is known for its strong red color and high price.
